Gnome 50 Released

The Gnome project has announced Gnome 50 – named “Tokyo” – featuring new parental controls, performance enhancements, and more.

According to the announcement, “parental controls have made a massive leap forward in Gnome 50. For the first time, it is now possible for parents and guardians to monitor screen time and set limits for child accounts.” These controls are integrated into Settings, which links to the updated Parental Controls app.

Other new features and improvements can be found in:

• Orca screen reader
• Documentation annotation
• Files app
• Calendar

Gnome 50 also gets a “major performance boost” from new hardware acceleration support. “By using your computer’s graphics processor to stream video, remote desktop sessions are now significantly smoother with much less lag and lower power consumption,” the announcement says.
