Biden Announces Sweeping AI Reforms

New initiative seeks to protect privacy and ensure accuracy in artificial intelligence.

The Biden administration has issued a sweeping executive order establishing standards for AI safety and setting goals for addressing AI’s worst effects. A series of directives within the executive order call for the government to:

  • Require that developers of the most powerful AI systems share their safety test results and other critical information with the US government.
  • Develop standards, tools, and test to help ensure that AI systems are safe, secure, and trustworthy.
  • Protect against the risks of using AI to engineer dangerous biological materials.
  • Protect Americans from AI-enabled fraud and deception by establishing standards and best practices for detecting AI-generated content and authenticating official content.
  • Establish an advanced cybersecurity program to develop AI tools to find and fix vulnerabilities in critical software.
  • Order further development of a National Security Memorandum that directs further actions on AI and security.

The Biden administration also called for congress to pass legislation for protecting privacy and pledged to take further action to advance responsible use of AI, explore AI’s potential for education, and develop best practices to maximize the benefits of AI for workers.
