Oracle Announces Big Data Appliance

Oracle Big Data Appliance combines hardware and software to allow the acquisition, organization, and analysis of large data sets.

Oracle has announced the availability of Oracle Big Data Appliance. Big data comprises data sets so large, they are difficult to manage with typical management tools.

According to the announcement, Oracle Big Data Appliance is an engineered system of hardware and software that incorporates Cloudera’s distribution of Apache Hadoop with Cloudera Manager, along with an open source distribution of R analytics software. The system, which runs on Oracle Linux, also features Oracle NoSQL Database Community Edition and Oracle HotSpot Java Virtual Machine.

Oracle Big Data Appliance comes in a full rack configuration of 18 Oracle Sun servers with a total of 864GB of main memory, 216 CPU cores, 648TB of raw disk storage, 40Gbps InfiniBand connectivity between nodes and other Oracle engineered systems, and 10Gbps Ethernet data center connectivity.

In the press release, Oracle also announced Oracle Big Data Connectors, a software product that, according to the announcement, helps customers easily integrate data stored in Hadoop and Oracle NoSQL Database with Oracle Database 11g.
