Supermicro Joins OpenPOWER Foundation

Hardware vendor signs on to seek open solutions for IBM POWER processors.

Hardware vendor Supermicro has announced that it is joining the OpenPOWER Foundation, a non-profit group devoted to developing open solutions for IBM's POWER processor series. The announcement also indicates a closer relationship for Supermicro and IBM across a variety of industries, including cloud and storage as well as the OpenPOWER ecosystem.

According to Supermicro co-founder Wally Liaw, “Supermicro is extending its strong IBM relationship by working with IBM on OpenPOWER systems that deliver maximum performance and efficiency.”

The move could ultimately make Supermicro less dependent on the now-dominant Intel-based processors for its line of enterprise-ready server systems.
