BackTrack 5 R2
This issue's DVD comes with the BackTrack 5 R2 [1]-[3] penetration testing distribution. BackTrack provides a great collection of pen testing and security auditing tools. You can boot into BackTrack Live from the DVD or install BackTrack permanently on your hard disk.
In addition to upgrading several tools, the BackTrack 5 R2 update adds some new tools, including a special BackTrack edition of Maltego, version 4.2.0 of the Metasploit exploit framework (Community Edition), an update of the Browser Exploitation Framework (BeEF), and version 3.0 of the Social-Engineer Toolkit (SET). Other new tools include the findmyhash Python script, Goofile CLI filetype search, LibHijack, and sucrack for cracking local user accounts.
Ubuntu Updates in Repositories
A major change in this new BackTrack release is that Ubuntu updates will be included in the project's repositories. When you run a distribution upgrade (dist-upgrade) on BackTrack, updated tools and packages from Ubuntu will appear, resulting in a more secure and stable distribution.
If you're upgrading your existing BackTrack installation to R2, you can add the new repository as follows:
echo "deb http://updates.repository.backtrack-linux.org revolution main microverse non-free testing" >> /etc/apt/sources.listapt-get update apt-get dist-upgrade
