Get to Know the Rexx Scripting Language
Rexx is widely considered the first general-purpose scripting language, says Howard Fosdick. It’s also open source, powerful, and easy to use.
“Rexx glues all its instructions, functions, and external libraries together in a consistent, dead-simple syntax. It doesn't rely on special characters, arcane syntax, or reserved words,” Fosdick says.
The language was standardized in 1996, and now “more than a half dozen interpreters run on every imaginable platform and operating system, along with many open source tools.”
