Strengths and Weaknesses of Docker Swarm and Kubernetes

Docker Swarm and Kubernetes both orchestrate container clusters, manage workloads, improve reliability, and automate the operation of distributed applications, but they are based on different architectures. We compare the two platforms, highlighting their benefits and downsides.

Docker Swarm [1] originates from the Docker ecosystem and aims to make setting up and operating container clusters as simple as possible. A cluster can go live with Swarm in just a few minutes. Swarm Manager coordinates the nodes, schedules deployments, and ensures automatic failover in the event of failure.

Kubernetes [2] relies on a comprehensive architectural model. The control plane handles management, while the worker nodes run the containers. This clear segregation allows for deployment in smaller setups, but also in multicluster environments with thousands of nodes.

We look at both container orchestration solutions and where each might fit into an existing infrastructure when it comes to deployment, integration, scaling, and maintenance.

Docker Swarm: Ease of Entry

Docker Swarm offers a practical and easy-to-learn introduction to cluster orchestration, particularly for admins looking to introduce containerization gradually. Swarm commands are based on the familiar Docker command-line interface (CLI). Teams already working with Docker can leverage their existing skills to handle scaling and rolling updates and to distribute traffic efficiently without additional training. Swarm is therefore a particularly good choice for small to medium-sized environments, proofs-of-concept, and scenarios in which organizations are looking to get up and running quickly.

Of course, the focus on simplicity has some limits. Swarm only offers basic orchestration and high-availability features. Advanced capabilities such as granular access controls, comprehensive observability, or automatic scaling mechanisms are not part of the plan. Although external tools can be integrated, Kubernetes already natively provides many of these features.
