El Capitan Holds #1 Spot on TOP500 List

Europe’s JUPITER supercomputer is the world’s newest exascale system.

Three US exascale supercomputing systems retained the top spots on the 66th edition of the TOP500 List, with El Capitan staying in the #1 spot, Frontier in second, and Aurora in third.

Europe’s JUPITER system became the fourth system in the world to reach exascale capability. According to the announcement, JUPITER achieved 1.000 Exaflop/s and is “built on Eviden’s BullSequana XH3000 direct-liquid-cooled architecture and powered by NVIDIA Grace Hopper Superchips.”

Here are the top 10 systems on the list:

  1. The El Capitan system at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California is based on the HPE Cray EX255a architecture and powered by AMD 4th Gen EPYC CPUs and AMD Instinct MI300A accelerators. The system achieved 1.809 Exaflop/s on the HPL benchmark.
  2. At Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the HPE Cray EX-based Frontier system achieved 1.353 Exaflop/s.
  3. The Aurora exascale supercomputer at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility in Illinois achieved 1.012 Exaflop/s.
  4. JUPITER Booster, installed at the EuroHPC/Jülich Supercomputing Centre in Germany and running the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) operating system, achieved 1.000 Exaflop/s,
  5. Microsoft Azure’s Eagle cloud system, running Ubuntu, measured 561 Petaflop/s.
  6. Italy’s HPC6 system, also running RHEL, measured 478 Petaflop/s.
  7. Japan’s Fugaku, jointly developed by RIKEN and Fujitsu, measured 442 Petaflops.
  8. The Alps system at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre achieved 435 Petaflop/s.
  9. Finland’s 100% hydroelectric-powered LUMI system achieved 380 Petaflop/s.
  10. The Leonardo system at the CINECA datacenter in Italy measured 241 Petaflop/s.
