Synology and QNAP Container Solutions on Network-Attached Storage

Run containers on Synology and QNAP for lean virtualization and simple application management, even in small and medium-sized environments.

Containers on network-attached storage (NAS) take applications to the data while consolidating services on existing NAS hardware and reducing the number of individual servers. Containers on Synology and QNAP storage devices provide the ideal underpinnings. Both platforms offer a managed environment in which you can retrieve images, define containers, segment networks, maintain persistent volumes, and export logs in an auditable way.

Preparing the Environment

Ensure clear structures: Integrate your NAS into Active Directory (AD), if necessary, and assign access rights to shares exclusively with domain accounts so that container access remains traceable at all times. Export logs as HTML or CSV files, and document changes directly in the project file. If you need to adjust configurations, duplicate the container instead of creating a new one. On QNAP, export containers before making changes, and make a note of the identifiers of anonymous volumes to ensure a successful restore without data loss later.

The practical benefits immediately pay off. Standardized deployments reduce downtime during updates. Proximity to your data reduces latency and simplifies backups. Consolidated operations on existing NAS hardware reduce the cost per service and keep operational control in your hands.

A clean setup is crucial and comprises shared folders, defined port assignments, unambiguous registry sources, and documented changes, creating a reliable platform for web services, databases, caching, monitoring, and internal tools. QNAP positions itself as an official Docker partner that not only supports Docker, but also LXD and Kata, supplemented by the lightweight K3s Kubernetes distribution for evaluations. Synology focuses on rigorous Docker management in its DiskStation Manager (DSM) with projects, images, registrations, networks, and a tightly integrated interface.
