AWS Previews Kiro Agentic IDE

Kiro emphasizes a spec-driven development approach.

AWS has announced the preview of Kiro, “an agentic IDE that helps you do your best work with features such as specs, steering, and hooks.”

The tool’s spec-driven development approach shares similarities with vibe coding but also addresses some of its shortcomings. “By using specs, Kiro works alongside you to define requirements, system design, and tasks to be implemented before writing any code. This approach explicitly documents the reasoning and implementation decisions, so Kiro can implement more complex tasks in fewer shots,” the website states.

“Kiro is great at ‘vibe coding’ but goes way beyond that,” write Nikhil Swaminathan and Deepak Singh in the introductory blog post. “Kiro’s strength is getting those prototypes into production systems with features such as specs and hooks.”

The preview version of Kiro supports a variety of programming languages and is optimized for English language prompts and interactions, with other language support planned. The tool is free to use during the preview period, with Free, Pro, and Pro+ options to follow.
