Remote access with Tactical RMM
Spy Story
Linux and macOS Agent Drawbacks
Installing agents for Linux and macOS systems is similar to installing on Windows clients (Figure 3), but, as already mentioned, only the Windows agents support the full range of Tactical RMM functions. Features such as an overview of installed patches are not available for Linux or macOS.
Figure 3: Besides Windows, Tactical RMM also supports macOS and Linux as target operating systems, as indicated by the operating system icons under Workstations in the overview.
Tactical RMM has a wide-ranging feature set. For example, the software backs up the monitoring part of RMM with comprehensive reporting. You can specify which parameters will be logged on which systems and add them to a report. Also, you can trigger both backup and recovery actions remotely. The detailed and well-written Tactical RMM documentation [5] provides a detailed overview.
It would go well beyond the scope of this article to look at all of Tactical RMM's features in detail. From an admin point of view, though, you should take a tour of the tool yourself. MeshCentral is reasonably intuitive, the menu items are clearly labeled, and the information the tools communicate is typically easily understandable.
Conclusions
Tactical RMM is a state-of-the-art tool for remote monitoring and management. The install procedure is not entirely trivial, but given appropriate preparation, it is fairly easy for an experienced admin to manage. That signed agents for Windows are only available for cash is a bitter pill to swallow – after all, secure, standardized, and compliant monitoring of Microsoft systems is not possible without signed agents. At least the fees charged by the vendor are reasonable.
