Amazon Linux 2022 Now Available for Use in AWS

By

The latest iteration of Amazon Linux, based explicitly on Fedora 34, is now ready for production use from AWS.

In a brief announcement, Amazon made it clear that the public preview version of Amazon Linux (2022), a general-purpose Linux distribution, is now available to be used on their cloud platform. This secure, stable, high-performance environment was specifically designed to run cloud applications.

This new release uses the Fedora project as its upstream which provides users a wide variety of software to install and use (such as the latest runtimes). AL2022 also includes SELinux, for a more robust security platform within the OS. This new version of Amazon Linux also allows users to lock to a specific release to control how and when updates are absorbed into the platform.

Starting with Amazon Linux 20222, new versions will be available every other year and will be supported for five years.

The new release is available to preview in all commercial regions and is provided at no additional charge. AL2022 can be launched from the AWS Management Console, AWS Command Line Interface, AWS Tools for Windows PowerShell, Runinstances, or an AWS CloudFormation template. Although the Preview version is based on Fedora 34, the official generally available version of AL2022 will be based on Fedora 35.
