Raspberry Pi with 8GB of RAM Now Available

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced the release of a single-board computer with 8GB of RAM.

It had been rumored for some time that a Raspberry Pi would be released with more RAM than most embedded projects could use. However, since admins have begun using these single-board computers for things like Kubernetes clusters, it became apparent more resources would be necessary.

To that end, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has given life to those rumors with a Raspberry Pi 4 variant (created in partnership with Micron) that includes 8GB of RAM. To make room for the extra RAM, the power supply components were shuffled. As such, the switch-mode power supply (located next to the USB 2.0 sockets) has been replaced with a new switcher, which resides next to the USB-C power connector.

The new Raspberry Pi 8GB variant is currently selling for $75 USD and includes 4K dual display output, USB 3, Gigabit Ethernet, wireless networking, and Bluetooth.

Of this variant, Eben Upton, Founder of the Raspbery Pi Foundation, said, “If you’re a power user, intending to compile and link large pieces of software or run heavy server workloads, or you simply want to be able to have even more browser tabs open at once, this is definitely the Raspberry Pi for you."
